Performance Summary: Week Ending January 3rd, 2025

  • The one-week numbers above straddle New Years and represent the last two days of 2024 and the first two days of 2025.
  • During the first two trading sessions of the new year the S&P500 index rose about 1.0%. All but two sectors started the year on a positive note.
  • Energy took the top spot up 2.1%. Out of the gates, Texas Pacific Land (+9.5%), and Williams Companies (+4.6%) had the highest returns for the two-day period.  Chevron (+2.0%) the second largest holding also contributed.
  • Utilities came in second, appreciating 1.8%, helped along by Vistra Corp. (+17.8%) and Constellation Energy (+12.8%).
  • Materials continues to decline as seen in recent weeks, only six of the twenty-eight constituents finished in the green. The sector fell 1.1% with Lind plc (-1.2%) and Sherman Williams (-1.0%) collectively make up almost 30% of the exposure were contributors to the decline.

ETF Tidbits:

The S&P 500 has experienced a remarkable bull market last year, thanks to the AI boom, Fed rate cuts, and Trump trade. However, the probability of high inflation and an economic slowdown may still be concern for investors.
