The last 5 day % return and the MTD % return columns tell the story of 2024.  The Tech sector is big and it is beating the market, and it is basically the only thing that is (with a nod to XLC which has been the very good YTD itself).  Bearish strategists are starting to call “bubble” and will likely try to line-up against XLK, NVDA and anything else that is valued “too richly”.  I was around back then in the “Tech Bubble” days.  It was a very low-tech time compared to now, but it was also a time where the valuation gages of the stock market were far more stretched than they are now.

Softness in economic and fundamental data has been a boon to equity prices in this cycle because the US equity market has a herd of Unicorns in its midst at present.  These Mega Cap. growers insulate the index from the vagaries of various weak economic data if the rate environment doesn’t completely choke out the consumer and thereby the broader economy.  Keep XLK and XLC as cornerstones of the portfolio while the present inflation dynamic remains in force.

This past week started off with some ambiguity as a hot inflation print would have likely re-applied downward pressure to Tech shares and Growth shares more generally.  But, as reality transpired, the table is now clearly set for the Bull.  Rates have moved lower, and the Fed has the data points it needs to refrain from tightening any further at present.
